QUESTIONS: Storybrooke Mysteries
Hi there!
We're only in the first season and we've already had several mysteries established on Once. Some of them have been solved, while many have not. This is a list of the questions whose answers (I think) will end up being significant. (Some of them are obvious, some of them have their own entries, but I still listed them because they're worth discussing. Also, more will be added to list as I re-watch each episode.):

IDEA: What is Charming's real name?
Prince Charming is quite the dashing fellow; even Regina can see the allure. And while the charmer's backstory has been revealed, one question still remains: what is Prince "Charming" James' real name?

CHARACTERS: Character List
This is a list of all the characters seen on Once so far. It will be updated with each new episode:
THEORY: Who is the Queen of Hearts?
Episode 17 "Hat Trick" definitely ranks among the best episodes of Once's first season. It had a great story, fantastic visuals and a stunning performance by Sebastian Stan as Jefferson, the Mad Hatter.
There are many unanswered questions in this episode: Who was Jefferson's wife, and why was she lost? How do Jefferson and Regina know each other? Where do the other portals within the hat go? But a stand-out among them: who is the Queen of Hearts?
Her face is covered by a veil, and the people in her court all wear masks, implying that she finds herself ugly and requires everyone to hide their faces as well. She also speaks through a tube with an airy, damaged-sounding voice, likely the result of whatever caused her to use the veil. It's obvious that her identity will be a big reveal in a later season. However, I think I know who she is:

*PROVEN* THEORY: August Wayne Booth is Pinocchio
All righty...
I had previously posted a theory stating that Dr. Whale was Pinocchio (you can read that here), but after viewing Episode 19 "The Return," I can see that I was wrong, though I still think I made good arguments. Here are the reasons why I now think August Wayne Booth is Pinocchio:

*PROVEN* THEORY: How Emma's Belief in Magic will Break the Curse
**This theory has been proven partially true. I'm glad I was so close, the first season finale was fantastic!**
The essential question surrounding Once has always been, "How will Emma break the Curse?" Her mere arrival in Storybrooke was, of course, the turning point that set time back into motion, but that alone was not enough. Neither was the kiss she later shared with Sheriff Graham which, though it did restore his memories, was also rendered ineffective by Graham's immediate death at the (literal) hands of Regina.
So what exactly does Emma have to do to break the Curse?
Through a Mirror Darkly
It's important to recognize the basic structure of the show itself, which is showing the fairy tale past as a mirror to the Storybrooke present. At times it seems as though the Counterparts are actually re-living their fairy tale pasts through their experiences in our world, a prime example of which is the Grumpy-centered episode Dreamy, with its candles-for-coal/diamonds-for-dust parallel. Whether this is a storytelling device employed by the writers or an effect of the Curse within the show's universe remains to be seen, but given Regina's propensity for mirrors, it's possible that it's an effect of the Curse. Either way, at this point it's fair to say that the mirroring device is on display.

*DEBUNKED* THEORY: Could Dr. Whale be Pinocchio?
**NOTE: This theory has been debunked. However, feel free to read through and leave any thoughts. I think the arguments are pretty good and I was VERY close to figuring it all out.**
There are a few Storybrooke characters whose FTL identities won't be revealed until later seasons; there simply isn't enough time with the other stories going on. Dr. Whale is one of them. He's been seen at the hospital intermittently throughout the first season, as well as having a date (and then later, a one-night-stand) with Mary Margaret.
Dr. Whale is definitely a mystery. His name, like Mary Margaret Blanchard and Ruby, must be a hint to his FTL identity. But there are no whales in any well-known fairy tales, except for Monstro the Whale, who appears only in the Disney version of Pinocchio. Once Upon A Time seems to be taking a more realistic approach to these tales, as contradictory as that sounds, so I don't think that there are talking whales in FTL or Storybrooke. But a whale has been seen on Once already, and I think it's the only clue to Dr. Whale's FTL identity.

THEORY: How a Mermaid and a Beauty Came to Co-Exist
**This theory has been edited with information from the season one finale. Edit has been noted below.**
One of the most inspired and heartbreaking episodes of Once Upon A Time is the Beauty and the Beast-themed episode titled "Skin Deep." Rumplestiltskin's backstory was greatly expanded, while Regina's machinations reached a new depth, and a new story will likely make waves in the future.

Ready? Okay, let's do it!
The ending segment of "Skin Deep" gave us Oncers quite a delighted surprise, when Regina asked Rumplestiltskin for a deal concerning "a certain mermaid." A significant portion of the magic of Once is the way it blends the classic elements of the original stories with the familiarity and visuals of their Disney interpretations, and because they have found a way to tell these stories in new ways, the possibility of what could be with the Once version of The Little Mermaid is genuinely thrilling. And while the excitement of such a story is understandably high, diving a little deeper into the events of "Skin Deep" may reveal more information was given to us than we thought, given that level of excitement.
1. How the Curse Works: Counterparts
The first important thing to note is that, as we all know, everyone in Storybrooke is a counterpart to their real life in Fairy Tale Land (FTL). But the Curse didn't just give them new memories as those counterparts, it transported them into our world in the exact situation that they found themselves in back in FTL. For example, Prince Charming was mortally wounded when the Curse finally came, but he was not dead, and so his counterpart David ended up in a coma. The same can be said for the other characters such as Dr. Hopper.
Now, think of Belle's situation for a moment. Belle is locked away in the psychiatric ward, obviously under Regina's orders. This means that Belle was also Regina's prisoner at the time Regina cast the Curse. Not only that, but there is another piece to this puzzle.
